Juliana Valentine McCourt (May 4, 1997 - September 11, 2001) was a victim of the 9/11 attacks. She was from New London, Connecticut and was a passenger on United Airlines Flight 175, along with her mother, Ruth McCourt. They were on their way to a vacation in California, when the plane was hijacked and flown into the south tower of the World Trade Center. Paige Farley-Hackel, who was Ruth's best friend and also Juliana's godmother, was to go on the trip with them as well. She had planned to fly with them, but she had frequent flyer miles with American Airlines and decided to get a ticket for American Flight 11, since it was to arrive in Los Angeles at about the same time as Ruth and Juliana's flight. Sadly, Paige was also killed in the attacks - Flight 11 was another one of the ill-fated flights that day. It struck the north tower 17 minutes before Flight 175 struck the south tower.
In another bizarre twist of fate, Juliana's uncle (Ruth's brother), who lived in New Jersey, went to New York City on the morning of September 11 because he had a business meeting in the World Trade Center. He arrived early, and was standing outside of the towers when the first plane hit. He assisted a woman who had been severely burned by the jet fuel. He then witnessed Flight 175 crashing into the south tower. Later that day, he learned that his sister and niece had been on the plane.
Juliana's father, David McCourt, launched a fund dedicated to the memory of his wife and daughter, the Juliana Valentine McCourt Children’s Education Fund. Its purpose was to teach children to live without hate. David was reunited with his wife and daughter when he passed away from cancer in 2013.
